Shillong Bamboo’s main aims is to promote the usage of bamboo products in everyday life as an eco – friendly substitute to wood, plastic and steel.
Shillong bamboo is a manufacturing unit Located in Mawsaitkhnam, Shillong, Meghalaya which provides innovative (eco-friendly) bamboo products made from bamboo and rattan canes obtained within the state with superior quality and design at competitive prices.
Speaking to Meghalaya Times, Shillong Bamboo founder, Bandapbiang Dewkhaid said that among the unique items that the team makes are drinking straws, speakers, office organizers, toothbrushes, soap cases, lampshades, chandeliers, natural straw brush cleaners, toothbrush holders out of bamboo.
“Shillong Bamboo was started in the year 2013. This year we were concentrating on building and designing structures with bamboo but in the year 2017 we started to move forward by making small products such as Bamboo drinking straws. Our vision is to live life without plastic, reducing the use of plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic toothbrushes and such,” Dewkhaid says.
He also informed that 4 artisans are engaged in making these bamboo products with 20 to 25 helpers working once a week depending on the work along with the help of some machinery.
Asked about the response to the products, Dewkhaid said that the response has been good especially from Europe while adding, “Our Bamboo straws and toothbrushes are getting popular across the nation.”
Speaking about the bamboo speakers made by the team, Dewkhaid said that these retail at Rs. 259 do not need electricity or batteries. He said that these operate through good design while claiming that the sound is much louder than normal speakers of mobile phones.
He also said that the more popular products include the straws, toothbrushes, speakers and lampshades while adding that even people from Maharashtra, Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and UP are buying these products which are even being sold outside India.
Asked about the future prospects, Dewkhaid said, “We are in the process of developing bamboo kitchen utilities and we are concentrating more on bamboo home furnishing such as lighting.”
Dewkhaid is convinced that bamboo products can compete in the open market as bases this on the huge demand for eco friendly products in a world which is shying away from plastic products.
Dewkhaid is very appreciative of the Development Commissioner Handicraft has been very supportive and helpful to Shillong Bamboo.
Meanwhile, the Export Promotion Council for Handicraft (EPCH) is helping Shillong Bamboo to get exposure globally after the team had attended the IHGF Delhi Fair in 2017. “Our business started to grow and has been doing successfully,” Dewkhaid said.
It may be noted here that EPCH was established under the Companies Act 1986 – 87 and is a non – profit organization, with an object to promote, support, protect, maintain and increase the export of handicraft.
It is an apex body of handicrafts exporters for promotion of exports of handicrafts from country and projecting India’s image abroad as a reliable supplier of high quality of handicrafts goods and service and ensured various measures keeping in view of observance of international standard and specification.
The council has created necessary infrastructure as well as marketing advertisements, information facilities, which are availed both by the member, exporters and importers.
